Microsoft's decision affecting email marketing was made in 2019 , but on August 30, 2021, it was put into practice: Microsoft has started deleting email accounts that have been inactive for the past two years, and this will affect your email marketing campaigns.
How does this decision affect you as a user?
A priori, the closure of an unused account should not be a significant issue for the account owner. But it may be if you had content stored in the cloud. OneDrive, Skype and Xbox accounts will also be closed.
⚠ IMPORTANT: Even if you use the email account, OneDrive accounts will also be blocked if you don't use them for 1 year. This also applies if you've reached your storage limit during the same period.
How does this news relate to your email marketing campaigns?
We already talked about what spamtraps are in this post . We controlling directors email list say that spamtraps are email accounts that should not be receiving emails. And therefore, if they receive an email, it means that the sender of the email is not “doing things right”, so it is most likely a spammer.
There are two types of scam accounts:
Pure: accounts that have never belonged to anyone or been used, so if emails are received, it is because the individual sending them is doing so indiscriminately and from accounts that do not even exist.
Recycled: This is the interesting point. Recycled spamtraps are those email accounts that belonged to a user but were blocked, closed, etc. These accounts are then used as trap accounts. This way spammers can be detected, since those who carry out email marketing campaigns must clean their database and not send emails to contacts who do not even open the emails they receive.
The reason why your campaigns may be altered
If Microsoft closes these inactive accounts, there will be a greater chance that they will become spam accounts, or at least Microsoft will have more tools to carry out this "hunt" for spammers.
This means that now more than ever you need to carry out database optimization tasks and ensure that your emails only reach the contacts who are really interested.
Use an email marketing tool
If you use Teenvio as an email marketing tool, you will receive immediate feedback on each of your emails and we will automatically clean up some of the non-existent accounts. You will especially need to pay attention to the lists of bounces and those of users who have not opened your last emails, since these are where these scam accounts can be found. You will also be able to check the users who have voluntarily unsubscribed from your communications, who has clicked and where, etc.
Ultimately, using an email marketing tool will allow you to analyze your campaigns in depth to gain a good reputation and stay away from these scam accounts.
