Helana Santos is Portuguese, works as a video game programmer and is making a name for herself abroad. The young entrepreneur founded Modern Dream and, in 2015, was named one of the 100 best programmers bythe UK’s “ Women in Games Awards ”.
In this article, we explore the story of Helana Santos and the world of female oman email list programming. Let's start with the interview the programmer gave to Family Gamer TV .
After finishing her degree in Portugal, Helana decided to go to Oxford Brookes University , where she studied “Computer Systems and Multimedia Systems”. Although she had never programmed before, the young woman had always shown an interest in the video game industry and, as a result, as soon as she finished her degree she decided to apply for several positions in large and small companies. The first opportunity came at Pivotal Games .
According to her, computer games are the perfect place to combine technical knowledge with the creativity needed for any project to be successful. After Pivotal Games, from EIDOS , Helana Santos worked at Blitz Games Studios until, in 2013, she decided to create her own company, in partnership with Ollie Clarke : Modern Dream .
In an industry where competition is fierce, the programmer has some advice for the younger generation: the important thing is to have willpower and try to apply for all positions. With recent changes, there are small projects that can become successful overnight. Regardless of gender, the most important thing is to work , she stresses.
This is not the first time that Helana Santos has been recognized internationally. Back in 2014, the young programmer was chosen by B AFTA Crew as one of the people in the video game industry to watch. To highlight the entrepreneur 's achievements , Develop 30 Under 30 presented her with an award to mark her achievements.
“LA Cops”: Programming police officers from the 70s
“ LA Cops ” is the name of Helana Santos’ latest project, together with the Modern Dream team. The game is set in the 70s and allows the player to control two police officers and choose their game strategy: they can be a “ good cop ” and arrest the bad guys or, alternatively, opt for a more aggressive stance and shoot all the bad guys that appear on the screen.
“ LA Cops ” has 8 levels, some of them with multiple stages. One of the characters is female, and one of the game’s goals is to show how difficult it was to work in a profession dominated by the opposite sex, such as the police. Drawing a parallel with her own career, Helana Santos states that today it is much easier to study anything and that it is not impossible for women to succeed in the world of video game programming .
“Women in Games Awards”
The “ Women in Games Awards ” are an award ceremony that aims to celebrate the success of women working in the computer games industry. The event aims to give visibility to female talent and also serve as a bridge between workers and companies.
Although the awards do indeed honour women, the event is far from being just for women. On the contrary, men and companies are welcome. Across the different aspects of the gaming world, the “ Women in Games Awards ” recognise the employer of the year, the hidden talent or the best team, among others.
